About Patio Heaters
Patio heaters are outdoor heating devices meant to extend use of outdoor recreational and living space into the cooler months like early spring and late fall. They are also referred to as mushrooms or umbrellas due to the covered shape of the heating device, and may be powered by electricity or gas. They are used both by private residences and public facilities.
- The heating element of a patio heater works by radiating heat from the central chamber through a metal mesh containment cage. Depending on the model, heat may be generated by electric coils or flames fuelled by gas. The heat escapes the chamber through the mesh and is spread downwards onto the space by a wide brimmed and convex cap, shaped like a small umbrella. They can alter the temperature in a radius of about fifteen to twenty feet, and can warm the air temperature up by 25 degrees maximum. Users may control the temperature through a turn-dial setting located on the support column.
Types
- Patio heaters come in several sizes, but the traditional model is a tall and thin column that supports the heating device. This style is the most effective for heating a large area because the height of this model allows the heat to radiate out across a larger area. However, table top and hanging models are also available.
Features
- Patio heaters are available in a variety of styles to fit into the decor of the space. Variations are generally available for the width of the support column, colour of metal used, and size of the base. Some residential models are even designed to look like interior floor lamps.
Effects
- In the past twenty years, patio heaters have become essential appliances for bars and restaurants, as it allows them to keep their outdoor seating spaces open longer and also accommodate patrons who are now not allowed to smoke inside the building due to stricter smoking bans. The Cheesecake Factory restaurants in particular have embraced patio heaters in the design of their cooler climate locations. Luxury hotel chains, like Hilton, Biltmore and Ritz, have also incorporated patio heaters into the designs of their open-air spaces, most notably outdoor entrances and sidewalk awnings.

Different Methods of Digging & Drilling for Water
Water Wells: Dug, Driven or Drilled
- Throughout human history, man has had need for wells, although the way that we go about digging our wells today is very different than how our ancestors dug them. A water well is an excavation down to access groundwater in underground aquifers. Water can be drawn up using a hand pump, a mechanical pump, an electric submersible pump, or a vertical turbine pump, in addition to being removed in containers raised by hand. Well water typically contains more minerals than surface water and may require water softening treatments to remove iron, manganese, arsenic, and others. Wells today are created either by digging, driving or drilling.
Digging Wells and Driving Wells
- Until recent times, all wells were pumpless affairs that were hand-dug, and therefore typically had to be at least wide enough to accommodate men with digging tools. Today, digging is still an option, even an attractive one in rural areas, where labour may be in greater supply than technology. Reinforced concrete well rings are lowered into the hole, and the well digging team digs under the cutting ring while the well column slowly sinks into the aquifer. Hand-dug wells are cheap and low-tech, and have been dug successfully up to 60 meters into the ground. Further, hand-dug wells have low operation and maintenance costs. However, construction can be dangerous due to collapsing earth, falling rocks and asphyxiation. Wells today are occasionally driven as well, using a hardened drive point and a perforated pipe. The point is driven into the ground with the stability of a tripod and a "drive," and pipe sections are added as needed. Once the water table is encountered, the well sediment is flushed out, and a pump is installed.
Drilling Wells
- Drilling wells can produced with simple hand methods, like sludging, or auguring, but more commonly are done with machine drilling tools. These machine tools use some combination of rotary and percussive forces to get water from a much deeper level than dug wells–up to several hundreds of meters. Wells drilled with electric pumps are the standard throughout the world, especially in sparsely populated areas. Most drilling machines for shallow wells are mounted on large trucks or trailers. Drilling is accomplished with a bit, which rotates into and breaks up the rock. Then a typically steel or plastic PVC factory-made pipe is inserted.

MIG Welding Tips for Filling Gaps
MIG welding is the process of using inert gas to create a solid weld. During this process metal is fed through a trigger mechanism into the welding flame and bonded with metal. The process involves the use of filler bars to complete welds and fill in gaps. It is another facet of this style of welding and one that beginners need to master in order to be proficient.
Choosing Filler Bars
A filler bar is a stick of metal that is used with the MIG welding process to fill in a gap in a seam or welded joint. Selecting the right filler bar is the first step in mastering this process. Filler bars are numbered corresponding to their makeup and thickness. These numbers will correlate to specific types of welds and materials, for instance aluminium, steel and stainless steel just to name a few. Keep a number of filler bars on hand and select them based on the type of material and its thickness used in your weld.
Tools
It always helps to have the right tools, and in welding these are varied. One useful tool to have on hand is a large file. This is used to file down the weld, seam and other parts of the material you are using. This is especially useful when you stop a weld and then pick it back up after the metal has cooled. Filing the welder tip will remove some of the flux metal and make it easier to get back to what you are doing.
Using the Right Gas
Another reason some welds fail is due to the type of gas used. When you start a project use the right type of gas for the material you are welding. This also is called shielding gas because it forms a protective barrier around the two metals allowing them to join together more firmly. For thicker metals and steel, use CO2 for instance. This gas burns hot so it gets into the weld faster. However, this gas is too hot for a thinner metal or material like aluminium siding. A mixture of Argon and CO2 (75 percent Argon and 25 percent CO2) is a better solution for thin metal
